Sumter County Detention Center
Construction
Construction Cost: $4.2 million
Gaston Construction provided construction management services to complete a new city/county jail located in Livingston, AL.
This unique jail facility was designed as an addition to an existing vacant building that formerly housed a rural hospital. The structure’s rear wing was renovated into new administrative offices for the county sheriff, deputies and administrative staff, and a new 104-bed detention wing with state-of-the art security electronics and environmental control systems was built adjoining the rear of the existing structure.
The project had been suspended for several months after termination of the original construction manager, and numerous contractor delay claims, change orders and still-unbid major subcontracts were pending when Gaston Construction took the project over. Gaston Construction completed a budget analysis and coordinated a value engineering study of the un-constructed remainder of the facility; negotiated change orders for un-bid major elements of the project; and resolved all pending delay claims before resumption of work according to a revised completion schedule.
