Runway 6/24 Extension

Construction

Client: Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport

Construction Cost: $47 million

Gaston Construction provided comprehensive program management services for Birmingham Airport Authority’s five-year, multi-phase runway extension program. The project included a 2,000-foot extension of the airport’s main north-south runway, the removal of 1.5 million cubic yards of dirt, major airfield utility relocations, roadway relocation, new road construction, installation of two new sediment ponds, a new electrical vault , and new airfield lighting and navigational aids (NAVAIDS). The longer runway will now accommodate a fully-loaded 747 cargo aircraft taking off on a nonstop overseas flight.
