Engineering
Client: Birmingham Airport Authority
Construction Cost: $1.4 million
Gaston Engineering provided resident inspection services for a paving/drainage project in the “glide slope critical area” adjacent to the airport’s main east/west runway. Total paving/drainage areas was approximately 8.0 acres. Project scope included excavation (from an offsite borrow pit), select fill, grading, relocation of approx. 2000 linear feet of RCP storm pipe (incl. new precast concrete headwall), seeding and sodding. Much of the work was conducted during night shifts, concurrent with closure of the rundway for instrument-aided landings and imposition of visual flight rules (VFR) operations only.
Gaston Engineering’s scope included all QC/QA inspection as well as coordination with the design engineers, surveyors, general contractor, BSIA (Operations) and FAA (control tower) personnel.
